Stage 2 of meaningful use is the second phase of EHR incentive program that focuses on advanced clinical procedures, more rigorous health information exchange, increased patient and family engagement and additional requirements for e-prescribing.

All providers begin participating by meeting the Meaningful Use Stage 1 requirements for a 90-day period in their first year of meaningful use and a year in their second year of meaningful use. After meeting the Stage 1 requirements, providers have to meet Stage 2 requirements for two years. Eligible professionals participate in the program on the calendar years, while eligible hospitals and Critical access hospitals (CAHs) participate according to the Federal fiscal year. The EHR incentive program encourages healthcare professionals to adopt electronic records, resulting in increased efficiency, reduced cost  and thereby providing best patient care.
