Even though using technology to provide remote health care has been popular for years, it took off only last year with the proliferation of wearable devices. Dignity Health unveiled telemedicine robots to bring in the expertise of specialist physicians to remote locations. Google unveiled a new video chat service “talk with a doctor now”. Even pharmacies are following suit with remote medical kiosks coming up in Walmart, Walgreens and CVS. Telemedicine is indeed not a distant possibility anymore, it’s here and thriving; due to, its ability to expand physicians geographical limits, use time more efficiently and greatly reducing the barriers to patient interaction. If handled well telemedicine can improve quality of care, but its widespread adoption will still require significant changes as to how it is delivered, accounted for and blended with other technologies.
